EDAC announces retirement of CEO Penny Gardiner, Ec.D.

After an extraordinary 34 years of dedicated leadership, Penny Gardiner, CEO of the Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC), has announced her retirement, effective December 31, 2025.

Penny’s tenure has been transformative, marked by unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and a profound commitment to advancing economic development across Canada. Under her guidance, EDAC has grown significantly in prominence and influence, becoming the national voice and resource for economic developers nationwide.

Reflecting on her time at EDAC, Penny expressed deep gratitude and affection for the profession: “I will, no matter what I do, continue to support the profession and its members in any way possible. Looking back at my career, you don’t realize all that you have accomplished.”

John Regan, President of EDAC, praised Penny’s extensive contributions: “It is difficult to imagine EDAC without Penny’s steady hand at the helm. Her tireless efforts, integrity, and exceptional strategic vision have been foundational to the association’s identity and strength today. Penny has inspired generations of professionals and leaves a legacy that will endure for years to come.”

Penny’s accomplishments include expanding professional development programs, fostering valuable partnerships, and enhancing EDAC’s operational effectiveness. Her leadership has notably elevated the standards and visibility of economic development across the country.

The EDAC Board of Directors has commenced a comprehensive search to fill the Executive Director position, committed to finding an individual who can build upon Penny’s outstanding legacy.

EDAC will celebrate Penny’s exceptional career and numerous achievements at events later this year, providing colleagues and peers opportunities to honor her lasting contributions.
