Scout and Illustrated Map – Branding – Abstract

For 2024, Norfolk Economic Development was excited to introduce two new visual identity assets that embody the spirit and uniqueness of Norfolk County: our economic development ambassador, affectionately named Scout, and an artistic county map.

An illustrated character representation of the Canada Warbler, Scout is not just a symbol of Norfolk’s biodiverse landscape, but also of the many adventures Norfolk has to offer.

Created through a collaboration between Norfolk’s Economic Development and Communications Departments, Scout started out as a little “widget” for the Visit Norfolk app. But he’s so cute, and so emblematic of Norfolk – we wanted to see him do more!

Both Scout and our new illustrated County map were developed by William Welsh during his student internship with our communications department in 2023/24. Already the little bird and the new map are working to increase visibility and foster a joyful, consistent connection throughout our community.

Scout has become not just an ambassador, but a local icon that resonates with residents and visitors alike. The character embodies the essence of Norfolk, from enjoying the diverse activities, events, and amenities offered here, to being an easily recognizable symbol that enhances our visual identity.

Currently, Scout is prominently featured across Norfolk County’s Economic Development marketing initiatives, appearing in print and digital media. Whether it’s the ‘Click here’ icon on our website, social media posts, window clings indicating inclusive spaces at local businesses, stand-up banners, or even on t-shirts, Scout has quickly become an effective and endearing local mascot.

Already, some local organizations have requested permission to use the image in other local projects. To ensure the integrity and quality of Scout and the Norfolk map are preserved, we have established guidelines for their use. These guidelines are available on the Economic Development website, providing local businesses and organizations with clear instructions on how to request permission to use these graphics for projects related to tourism promotion and economic development in Norfolk County.

Requests for use must include details on how the graphics will be used and the duration of their intended use. Once approved, adhering to these guidelines ensures a consistent and high-quality representation of Norfolk County:

Keep It Original: Use the graphics in their original form. Any modifications require prior approval.

Quality Matters: Ensure the graphics maintain high quality in all materials and applications.

Give Credit: Include the attribution “Used with permission from Norfolk County Economic Development” wherever the graphics are used.

Follow the Rules: Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations when using the graphics.

By following these guidelines, businesses can effectively incorporate Scout and the Norfolk map into their promotional materials, contributing to a cohesive and positive representation of Norfolk County. This initiative not only enhances local identity but also supports economic growth and tourism by showcasing what makes Norfolk County a unique and inviting destination.

Scout and the Norfolk map symbolize our community’s pride and distinctiveness. They serve as visual reminders that celebrate Norfolk’s natural beauty, cultural richness, and vibrant community spirit. Through careful stewardship and collaborative use, we aim to strengthen connections and promote Norfolk County as a welcoming and memorable place for all.
