In the face of ongoing economic turbulence and uncertainties, businesses in Maple Ridge have been feeling increased pressures alongside the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents, keen to support the local businesses they rely on for shopping, dining, and recreation, faced challenges of their own, including tightening budgets and economic instability.
The City of Maple Ridge, in collaboration with the Ridge Meadows Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association (DMRBIA), launched a strategic initiative aimed at unifying the community around local businesses. This initiative, spearheaded in early 2025, sought to energize the community to “Choose Maple Ridge.”
“Choose Maple Ridge,” a collaborative endeavour by the City, Chamber, and DMRBIA, transcends mere local purchases. It advocates a mindset of selecting Maple Ridge as the preferred option for shopping, dining, and recreational experiences, turning routine decisions into opportunities to support the local economy year-round.
The initiative’s tagline, “Support Local,” underscores the ripple effect of choosing Maple Ridge. Such decisions foster community resilience by supporting friends, family members, and residents who are integral to local businesses.
The initiative employed a dual approach:
A suite of promotional videos was released on the City’s social media platforms in early spring 2025. These videos, featuring a local family who are also business owners, were filmed at various local businesses to deepen community connection and emphasize the campaign’s local ethos.
Supporting these videos, the City developed collateral materials including:
The “Choose Maple Ridge” branding has resonated with the broader community, demonstrating its versatility in potentially complementing other City initiatives such as investment attraction and tourism campaigns.
In the initial phases of the Choose Maple Ridge campaign, the videos performed well with audience reach nearing 24,000 unique viewers and audience engagement rates as high as 6.63 percent.
