The Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Association (Leduc-Nisku EDA) is seeking a Rural Economic Development Officer to help grow the prosperity of the rural communities in the Leduc Region. Job Title: Rural Economic Development Officer
Reports to: Executive Director 

Job purpose

The Rural Economic Development Officer work closely with the Executive Director and the entire LeducNisku EDA Team to support economic development for our rural municipalities, with a focus on the Village of Warburg.

Duties and responsibilities

The Rural Economic Development Officer is a key player in the economic development of the Leduc region’s rural municipalities and the achievement of the organization’s strategic plan.  The Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Association (Leduc-Nisku EDA) represents the County of Leduc, City of Leduc, and five municipalities in Leduc County, in attracting industry and business to the region and enhancing the region’s economy, creating long-term growth and prosperity.

The role will focus on developing a long term economic development strategy for our rural municipalities, with a key focus on the Village of Warburg.  This strategy will focus on developing BRE programs, understanding potential investment attraction possibilities, developing key KPIs for success, and working with consultants on the industrial land development project.

The ability to build relationships and stay on the pulse of what is occurring within business and the economy is key to the success of this role.  The incumbent, must be a strong communicator, be comfortable with networking with business leaders and managers, and be able to achieve results in business attraction, retention and expansion in rural municipalities.

The includes:

1.  Networking and Relationship Development

A key element of this role is the ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders and build networks with business in the region.  The Leduc-Nisku EDA needs to have a strong working knowledge of the businesses in the region in its five key industries. The REDO is responsible for engaging the individuals in that business, understanding their business, and seeking opportunities to build the economy of the rural municipalities.

2. Business Retention and Expansion

To support the ongoing development of the region’s businesses and to facilitate new business growth the Leduc-Nisku EDA is charged with providing support to local business and entrepreneurs.  The REDO will work with the Leduc-Nisku EDA Team to identify key business support services for rural municipalities, identify a plan to implement these supports and then execute to deliver these supports.

3. Investment Attraction

A key element of economic development is liaising with developers and providing updated information on the available sites for various business opportunities. The REDO will:

  • Be the first contact with developers from outside the community for site visits and statistics, preparing and disseminating information regarding the availability of land, buildings and other facilities conducive to the promotion of business and industry.
  • Identify available commercial and industrial lands and assist business and investor prospects to view these properties

4. Strategic Planning

As part of the strategic planning team, the REDO will work with the Leduc-Nisku EDA team to develop a strategic economic development strategy for the Village of Warburg and other rural Leduc communities.

Qualifications

This role requires a dynamic individual who has a strong desire to promote, enhance and sustain the quality of the Alberta economy.  Desired qualifications are:

  • University or college degree in Business or Economic Development
  • 3 – 7 years’ experience in economic development
  • Experience in business development, sales, marketing, commercial real estate or entrepreneurship
  • Strong communications skills
  • Strong technology and computer skills
  • Strong interpersonal management skills
  • A background in one of our key industries (Agri-Business, Advanced Manufacturing, Energy & Utilities, Environmental Services, Transportation & Logistics)would be considered an asset
  • A track record of attaining business results Politically and culturally sensitive
  • Highly effective project management, prioritization, multi-tasking, and time management skills to meet deadlines
  • Ability to absorb new ideas and concepts quickly and to ensure they are clearly communicated to an audience.
  • Ability to manage and co-ordinate the end-to-end development process while meeting deadlines and budget requirements.
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts
  • Strong morals and ethics, along with a commitment to privacy
  • Strong presentation, written and verbal communication skills
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and results-oriented
  • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution, and people management skills

Working conditions

This position will require work outside of office hours and travel to the rural communities on a frequent basis.  Hours of work are Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week, with flexible work options available.

This position will require that a criminal record check be conducted. A driver’s license and vehicle are required.  A passport is required.

This position is considered a Professional/Technical 2 on the Leduc-Nisku EDA salary grid.
