Tourism Winnipeg business events campaign: Winnipeg+

Submitted ByEconomic Development Winnipeg

When it comes to telling Winnipeg’s business events story, we tend to get a bit cheeky. Instead of leaning into regular voice over videos that highlight event spaces, we turn both our business events managers and Winnipeg venues into stars in their own right, via sassy videos that our audience of event planning professionals have come to expect.

This is what Winnipeg+ –– “the top streaming service for business events television” –– is all about.

By paying homage (and okay, sometimes satirizing) popular programs like Selling Sunset, The Amazing Race and History Channel and HGTV programming, we showcase our world-class venues while also introducing our sales team to our target audience of association executives ––all while keeping this audience entertained in the process.

Our Winnipeg+ website looks like most streaming service landing pages. On it, you’ll find trailers to fictitious Winnipeg shows that celebrate this city’s unique business events infrastructure –– from venues, to local employees, to overall jovial vibes.

We’re also able to constantly add to the site, given the format of creating new “shows.”

On top of “established programs,” our latest trailer –– and dare we say, our best yet –– runs like a full Netflix-style fall lineup preview. In it, you’ll catch an homage to Hallmark films (many of which are shot here) that showcases the RBC Convention Centre and The Fort Garry Hotel; a political intrigue piece that centres around the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and Club Regent Event Centre; Property Sisters, an HGTV spoof that highlights the Victoria Inn Hotel & Convention Centre; and Below Deck: Nonsuch, which shows how the Manitoba Museum can put the wind in your event’s sails.

All these videos were written and conceptualized by our marketing department, and our local partners Handcraft Creative filmed and edited them all. Our website was also built by local Winnipeg company Visual Lizard, while all the partners featured are part of our Team Winnipeg, “a collection of attractions, hotels, businesses and business leaders that are constantly collaborating to market Winnipeg to the world.”

Thus far, the Winnipeg+ campaign has been measured by new leads to our business development team, along with campaign online engagements and landing page views.

One of the most important things about sales is getting in front of prospective clients, and by showcasing these “shows” at targeted industry events, we are always able to draw people to our booth.

By turning our business development team into “television stars,” we’ve already put their faces and this city at top of mind during conference season. We also use targeted online campaigns to ensure that these “programs” are viewed by decision makers who are sure to be engaged.

Locally, this campaign also generates funds into our organization from attractions and venues who want to take part. Who wouldn’t want to see their location as both the feature and backdrop of a tongue-in-cheek (and yet, very informative) reality tv show?

This is the Winnipeg+ advantage.
