Invest Oakville Trivia Tuesday

At the heart of Invest Oakville’s marketing strategy lies Trivia Tuesday, wherein every Tuesday, the Invest Oakville social media and marketing team launches polls featuring questions related to economic development. This is aimed at engaging our audience and increasing awareness for the services that we offer through relevant and up-to-date multiple-choice questions. The following day, we unveil the correct answer with a corresponding accessible graphic or image, as well as any other pertinent details and links to our website. This approach to social media engagement is not only fun and innovative, but also educates our audience on key economic development numbers and facts, and presents Oakville as a top location to invest in.

This initiative has been extremely effective in helping the team maintain a consistent and current social media presence with original and informative content. Since the start of Trivia Tuesday, we have exceeded our monthly follower targets for both of our social media platforms (X and LinkedIn) and increased our follower engagement by more than double on LinkedIn. Additionally, the format of Trivia Tuesday is such that it organically encourages user engagement and two-way communication between Invest Oakville and our audience, often creating opportunities for further interaction by linking to our website or email.

Our team also works hard to ensure that the questions and answers are accessible, engaging, and diverse. For example, one Tuesday we asked our audience what percentage of Oakville residents aged 25 to 65 have a postsecondary education. The next day, we revealed the answer visually as well as verbally, with a clean and concise graphic summarizing the data and alternative text available for visually impaired users. The graphic template was developed by Oakville’s Communications department and professionally illustrates the town’s corporate identity.

However, this project has also come with the challenge of managing staff time, as the Oakville Economic Development team is small, and we don’t have staff dedicated only to marketing. It takes time to work on question ideas and social media posts every week, especially if we are trying to make sure they are current and up to date. We thus collaborate with other Invest Oakville staff, gaining insight into other projects currently underway and incorporating these new ideas into Trivia Tuesday questions and answers. This also ensures that our target audience (businessowners that are currently in Oakville/Halton Region and businessowners that are looking to relocate their companies to Oakville) is always up to date with the department’s activities and is consistently engaged on a diverse range of topics. Also, we always make sure to tag any relevant organizations (e.g., Town of Oakville) as we found, through engagement, that many Oakville businessowners tend to also be Oakville residents, thus allowing us to utilize the Town of Oakville and Halton Region social media channels to our benefit. Through this, we have also improved interactions within the Oakville business ecosystem by including the Business Improvement Areas (BIAs), Oakville Chamber, and other organizations in our Trivia Tuesday questions.
