Purpose:

As the country moves toward more sustainable solutions, southern Ontario has emerged as a prominent hub for automotive manufacturing and innovation, specifically in the electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing sectors. Windsor-Essex and its surrounding communities are at the forefront of this exciting new chapter for southern Ontario’s automotive sector.

With billions of dollars in recent investment across Windsor-Essex and available job postings on the rise, it is now more important than ever to have a strategy and tools in place to ensure an adequate and sustainable workforce not only to accommodate emerging supply chains but also to ensure existing companies have the required talent to operate at full capacity.

To support this initiative, Invest WindsorEssex, launched EVCareers.ca, a new digital tool/website that will enhance the immediate regional workforce development needs in Windsor-Essex. EVCareers.ca is an online worker registry designed to connect job seekers with employers in the Windsor-Essex EV sector. With a user-friendly interface, this website will provide job seekers with the resources and information they need to build successful careers in this growing industry and is an integral part of a larger, regional workforce development and talent program led by Invest WindsorEssex.

Challenges and Changes:

One of the major challenges facing employers currently is having access to an adequate and skilled workforce.

Launching this worker registry website (EVCareers.ca) was one of the strategies that Invest WindsorEssex initiated as part of a regional talent attraction plan.

The website has gone through several changes and upgrades since the initial launch to maintain the ideal user experience. Some of the challenges experienced during the development phase and since the launch of the site include the following:

  • Collecting enough data while ensuring an efficient user profile set up with an easy to navigate user interface. Several tests for the site were completed with a variety of different groups during the development phase to ensure complete functionality of the site as well as user satisfaction.
  • Ability to track and follow a user to understand which jobs they have applied for and if they were successful. The site is currently undergoing further updates for better user tracking as well as more functionality for the user to upload exact skill set, experience, etc… The updated tool will also allow employers to manage an account and add active jobs as needed. Job seekers will have the ability to directly apply to active job listings as well as create resumes in a variety of formats based on their profile details.
  • Competition with other regions as workforce development and talent attraction are a major focus across the county. It is critical to ensure the website has top visibility and the most up-to-date information.
  • As the EV industry is a relatively newer field, it was also important to properly align relevant programing provided by local post-secondary institutions so that job seekers could ensure they had the necessary skill set for next-generation vehicle production. To address this challenge, EVCareers also provides information on programing and certifications available for those looking to upgrade skill set.
