Beyond the Glass: The Tech-Driven Revolution in Greenhouse Growing

Purpose of Project: The video explores how Chatham-Kent’s greenhouse industry has become a $4 billion-plus economic powerhouse in Canada by going behind the scenes at two operations—Truly Green and Cedarline—to reveal the tech secrets of controlled-environment agriculture and the regional ecosystem that makes it thrive.

  • Purpose to educate the public about innovation and tech in the Greenhouse Industry including impact it has on the local food supply chain.
  • This video showcases not only the high-tech underpinnings of modern greenhouse farming but also the collaborative framework—education, infrastructure, policy, and community—that sustains it. Our aim is to inspire new investment, encourage knowledge exchange, and reinforce Chatham-Kent’s reputation as Canada’s premier greenhouse hub

  • Breakdown:
  • Video opens with narration outlining the agriculture/agri-food sector in Chatham-Kent highlighting beneficial statistics.
  • Heart of the project lies in intimate interviews and immersive walkthroughs of these two greenhouses. Viewers gain first-hand insights into advanced robotics and automation streamline tasks and improve efficiencies. As well as enhancing the opportunities for more knowledge-based careers.

  • Marketing Campaign: Long version of this video created at just under 7 minutes and a shorter social media version running at 2:30 mins. Videos were initially launched through social media channels for Chatham-Kent Economic Development & Tourism on LinkedIn & The Municipality of Chatham-Kent during Ontario Agriculture Week October 7-13, 2024. The social media posts included short 2:30 min video with link to the full 7-minute video on YouTube.

Target Audience: Public that may not be familiar with greenhouse industry innovation. (New residents, youth interested in finding careers in the industry, economic development professionals & agriculture industry representatives on provincial and national level.

Challenges & Changes Made: No major challenges were faced with this project aside from scheduling the outside drone shots during ideal weather circumstances.

 

Outcome & Results:

  • Video featured on Chatham-Kent Economic Development Website & YouTube permanently for continuous viewing and future usability.

Effectiveness/Meeting Objectives: Video project exceeded objectives with content featured. Photos, imagery and content can be utilized for future marketing initiatives. Social Media responses/views well received, and video is permanently featured on the investck.ca website and YouTube for continuous viewing.

 

Sustainability: The video was created to educate and inspire those about what takes place within the large greenhouses and their substantial impact on the local food supply chain. Innovation in technology is advancing operations and it’s important to support these businesses and what they do. Economic development professionals can view this product to learn more about the industry.
