Chief Executive Officer – CEDC

Closing Date: September 20, 2019

Does your aptitude for business leadership align with a passion for helping communities prosper? Are you an inspiring, dynamic leader with the ability to create a results-oriented culture of service excellence, coupled with a deep appreciation for life in Northwestern Ontario?

THE ORGANIZATION

Incorporated in 2006 and actively supported by industry, the community, and government, the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is an arms-length community development corporation, committed to promoting business development, retention, and expansion; and to supporting entrepreneurs in the creation and implementation of business plans. The CEDC also oversees Tourism Thunder Bay to further promote opportunities within the city to prospective business interests.

WHY THUNDER BAY?

Located in the geographic centre of North America, and with a population of nearly 110,000 residents, Thunder Bay is the largest municipality in Northwestern Ontario and the region’s de facto commercial, academic, administrative, transportation, and medical hub. Rich in resources, cultural diversity, breathtaking topography, and unparalleled opportunity, Thunder Bay is not only a great place to do business, it’s a great place to call home.

We are seeking an outgoing, charismatic candidate with a broad array of senior executive attributes – an ally and an advocate for positive change, committed to making a lasting contribution to the economic prospects of Thunder Bay, and contributing to the community’s continuing business and industry growth and developments.

THE POSITION

As CEO, you will be the external voice of the CEDC, articulating the strategy and story as you head up the business development initiatives of the organization. Working closely with the Board of Directors and staff, you will strive to establish and implement an inspiring but practical long-term vision based on the organization’s strategic goals.

Accountable to the Board of Directors, you will be a leader, a guide, a coach, and a mentor, responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the CEDC – implementing the organization’s policies and decisions; developing and monitoring funding and operational budgets; managing CEDC initiatives, activities and programs; and building positive relationships at the local, provincial and national level.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

You have a post-secondary degree in business, marketing, or a related discipline complemented with seven to ten years of demonstrated senior business management experience.

KEY SKILLS & LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITIES

You possess a successful track record of marketing opportunities to clients; leading teams to provide outstanding service to diverse stakeholders; implementing best practices in governance and management; and developing and sustaining effective relationships and partnerships with business, government and community organizations. Specific experience in the negotiation of funding commitments from public and private sector organizations is considered an asset, as is present or past experience of living or working in the region.

Specifically you’re able to demonstrate experience in:

  • Strategic and operational planning
  • Operational, financial, and performance management
  • Human resources leadership
  • Professional and community relationships
  • Board of Directors support / partnership

If you’re able to demonstrate your commitment to community-building through your visionary leadership skills, please contact Tracy Hamalainen at the CEDC to request the position profile and full job specification. Tracy can be contacted at thamalainen@thunderbay.ca or (807) 625.3962

Please apply by sending your resume together with a cover letter to

THamalainen@thunderbay.ca by 4pm on September 20th, 2019.

All applications and contact with the CEDC regarding this position will be treated in confidence.
